The Gel Cell battery is similar to the AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery in that its contents are sealed, but different because technically the AGM battery is still considered to be a wet cell. The guts of a Gel Cell contain a silica additive that causes it to set up or stiffen, first like Jell-O, then after subsequent discharge/charge cycles more like peanut brittle. Micro-cracks form in this gelled electrolyte that provide paths for the oxygen recombination reactions between the positive and negative plates. The recharge voltages on this type of cell are lower than the other styles of lead acid battery making it probably the most sensitive cell in terms of adverse reactions to over-voltage charging, and thus needing special care. This is a GEL cell battery charger only. The model for AGA, SLA, Flooded, Conventional Automotive and Motorcyle batteries is Model 012-0128. This unit will only work on cars and equipment using GEL (e.g. the BMW xi series automobiles).
Great Gel Cell Battery Tender November 25, 2008

I've been using the conventional version of this same charger for years to maintain my motorcycle battery. When I recently replaced it, the battery had outlived its expected life by about three years and the person I talked to at the dealership accredited this directly to the fact that I kept the battery on a tender. When I got a new battery it was a newer gel cell model, so I purchased this new battery tender. It works just as well as the old one, and expect that I'll see the same extended life on the new battery. This is a must-have for any motorcyclist, or anyone else that used a seasonal vehicle that uses a 12v battery. Plug it in for the winter and forget about it... It is compact, reliable, and the quick disconnect wiring makes it easy to plug in other adapters. Just make sure you're getting the right battery tender for the type of battery you have! As other reviewers have pointed out, this model is designed specifically for gel cell batteries.

I have a sports car with a gel cel battery that isn't driven daily. Before I bought this product, the battery would often die and I'd have to jump start it. Several people recommended this product to me and it works great. I use the cigarette lighter attachment with this and leave it connected to my car whenever I'm not driving it. There are lights that indicate that it's on, and whether it's charging or not.

I guess you would say we have to many play toys.. also have 5 of the smaller

I purchased the Battery Tender Plus 12V to connect to my sports car that I usually store in the 4th bay of the garage from late November until early April.
I works perfectly and it has kept my battery fully charge. Even in the coldest days over the last month, my Weekend Toy has started right up, thanks to the Battery Tender keeping the battery charged to its optimal level.
